RENAMO was a rebel group supported significantly by the USA and South Africa. In 1992 it signed a peace agreement with the Mozambique government and became a legal political party, but since 2011 its leader, Afonso Dhlakama, has threatened renewed violence, and in April of 2013, militants from the group attacked the headquarters of the riot police.
