The Sierra Leonean Civil War was started in 1991 by the Revolutionary United Front under Foday Sankoh. The conflict killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions; it was characterized by the use of child soldiers and funded by diamond sales. In 2000, a combination of UN and British forces created peace in Sierra Leone. Since then, over 70,000 combatants have been disarmed and the country has established a functioning democracy. The Special Court for Sierra Leone was set up to prosecute war criminals.
